A case has been registered against three women passengers for allegedly assaulting a driver of the Uber taxi in Kochi on Wednesday. According to reports,  Marudu police have arrested the three women identified as Clara Shibin (28), Sheeja Afsal (30) and Angel Mary (36) .

The complaint was registered by uber driver Shafeeq (37), a Kumbalam native, who was hospitalized soon after the incident at Vytilla at noon.

According to cops, the trio availed UberPool, Uber’s on-demand carpooling service launched in the city barely a week back but then wanted the cab for themselves, so they beat up the driver Shefeeq when he refused to evict an already seated passenger. The women were booked under section 324 of IPC for voluntarily causing hurt by weapons or means. Sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 294 B (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place) were also imposed on them. They were later released on bail.

An Uber spokesperson said, “What has been described is totally unacceptable. Violence in any form is against the spirit of our community guidelines, and we have barred the riders from accessing the app. We are cooperating with the law enforcement authorities and assisting the driver partner as best as possible.”
